History

One of the few original two story buildings in town, The Old Standby began its colorful career as a saloon in 1857. The stucco covered stone building was built by Fredrick Huechling as a bar downstairs with the family living quarters upstairs. It no doubt enjoyed it's location across from what was then the County Courthouse on the road from San Antonio to Del Rio. In 1880 it changed hands and got the name of Greenfront Saloon and a notorious reputation. It was the scene of at least two recounted shootings involving Medina County law officers.

In 1907 the back single-story portion of the house was added to include a family kitchen and extra room. Prohibition saw the close of the saloon, a new owner, and the opening of a drug store and soda fountain. In 1976 it again became the Old Standby Saloon. In 1979 it was remodeled again and converted into a single family dwelling. And now it's a public building again.
